Conversations for closure are essential for creating “a sense of harmonious completion” wherein tension with past events is reduced or removed and balance and equilibrium are restored. We propose that one way to deal with complacent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], resigned, and cynical backgrounds is through reinvention. Reinvention differs from change in that it is not about changing what is, but undoing what is and creating something new. Reinvention involves reframing, and inquiring into the context in which we are interpreting and interacting with the world, with the intent of uncovering that context. Once the context is revealed, and people can take responsibility for having propagated it, a new context can be designed.
Conversations for closure enable and facilitate reinvention. Bridges proposes that where prior changes have not been closed or completed, people are left dissatisfied. People are bound to the existing background until the conversations of the past have been brought to a close.
It is our assertion that complacency, resignation, and cynicism are realities to which people are blind. People do not see their world as a product of their conversations, but, conversely, they see their conversations as a factual report on an existing world. Changing the background involves making people aware that they are operating in a socially constructed context and that they are not limited to that context. Indeed, the power in dialogue is the ability to bring background constructions (assumptions, conclusions, decisions, etc.) into the foreground so that they can be examined.
This is the third part of a series of articles, all of which are excerpted from a larger paper,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “Resistance and the Background Conversations of Change”. The original paper was written in 2003 by Randy McNamara, who leads the Landmark Forum program for Landmark Education,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and co-authors Laurie Ford (Critical Path Consultant) and Jeffrey Ford (Max M. Fisher College of Business,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ohio State University).
In fact, traditional attempts at reducing resistance themselves will be seen through the perceptual filters of the different backgrounds. For example, involvement, education,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and participation are among the strategies recommended for dealing with resistance. But in a complacent reality, such strategies are likely to be seen as unnecessary; in a resigned reality as futile; in a cynical reality as malicious or manipulative. Similarly, attempts to increase the credibility of management will be received with resistance tempered by complacency, resignation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or cynicism. Traditional situation oriented attempts to overcome resistance that is a product of constructed background conversations will only serve to further reinforce that background and expand or strengthen the resistance. What is required are strategies that address the background conversations.
If the backgrounds that engender resistance are generated and sustained through conversations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then the task of changing these backgrounds entails changing what is said. This means that people could come to recognize that they are constructing their reality in their everyday conversations, realize that they do not need to continue saying what they have said in the past, and start saying something different. The three constructed backgrounds presented here portray resistance as a response to an assemblage of conversations about the nature, meanings, and causes of past successes or failures, rather than as a response to the actual conditions and circumstances of the change initiative itself. Each background provides a coherent and complete sense-making structure that integrates the past and the background construction seamlessly: the individual is engaged in conversations that are given by the past. There are times when it is valuable to clear up the past, and there are times when it is valuable to visualize the future, but only if done with both feet firmly planted in the present.

Incompletions are more about what is going on inside of us. Incompletions are those things in our past that we have not let go of or forgiven. Much like Tolerations, they nag at us and take our energy. They are like background noise, constantly humming away, distracting us from totally being in the present. There may be shame related to the incompletion, or anger. Denial can accompany an incompletion, or sadness. There is a richness in the present, and a power that enables us to create wonderful things. When we are able to stay present to the moment, to be with it and in it, magical things happen. By staying in the present we are able to put the past and the future into perspective.
Getting complete will create more opportunities for you by opening up space in your life. You will have more confidence because you will know that you have done the best possible job of cleaning up your past,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. You will have more time because you will be focused in the present and not drug down by the past and you will have fewer problems.
To start forming ten daily habits, start out slow. Choose only one or two to start with, do them for a month until they truly become habits and then add a couple more every month until you are up to ten, or whatever number feels good to you. And remember, these are not carved in stone, if you try out a habit that just does not work, dump it and find something you really like. This is about taking care of yourself and doing what you want to do for yourself. Remember these are your habits, not anyone else's. By establishing ten daily habits you are creating a healthy routine that will support you in staying focused, give you more energy, and make you feel great.
Extreme Self Care
The final part of this equation is extreme self care. One might think that Extreme Self Care sounds selfish, and besides who has time to take care of themselves. We may not have control over what happens to us, but we do have control over what we do about it and our reactions to it. The good news is since we have created our lives to be the way they are, we also have the power to create them to be exactly the way we want them to be. Cause grief
Waste time
Take continuous energy
Make us less conscious
Take away from our integrity
Take us off purpose
Make us feel bad about ourselves
Keep us from totally being present
I believe this concept especially applies to our weight and how we feel about ourselves. Once I asked my husband if I looked fat in something,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his reply was "What are you going to do about, loose ten pounds in the next ten minutes." The fact is I could not do anything about it except be happy with the way I was and make a choice to make some changes if I want to lose the ten pounds. I think the key to successful weight loose and maintenance is to accept ourselves the way we are and love ourselves for who we are, not for our dress size.
When going through this process the first thing I had to do was return my over due library books and pay the fine of $50.00. Not a fun thing to do but it got it off my mind, I felt great that I had kept my commitment, since borrowing means just that, and I learned a valuable lesson, it is cheaper to keep agreements than to let them get over due. Get complete, you will feel better.
How do we know if we need to get complete with someone or something in our lives? If there is anyone in our life that we would fill uneasy about bumping into or there is an experience that we just as soon avoid thinking or talking about,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is probably something we are not complete with in that relationship or situation. How do we get complete? Some suggestions I would make are: if you borrowed it return it, if you loaned it out and want it back ask for it or write it off if the item is never going to be returned. If you have hurt someone, apologize, even if it means calling someone you have not talked to in fifteen years. And if someone has hurt you, forgive them. This does not make them right, it simply frees you and allows you to move on with your life. This one might take awhile, but it will be well worth the effort.
Tolerations
Tolerations are those little things in your life that suck your energy. They do not have to be major, in fact it is usually the little things in life that get to us. It can be a leaky faucet, a loose wheel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or those ten extra pounds. Tolerations can also be major, like an abusive co-worker, a major car problem or over extended credit cards. Whatever the toleration, it takes our energy and does not allow us to be totally present in the moment. Most people think that they are not tolerating anything, or at least not very much. I was the same way when I first heard about the concept. It was all I could do to come up with five tolerations. Then I really started thinking about it and ended up with 146! One of my tolerations has always been my weight. Even when I weighed 128 pounds, at 5 feet 7 inches that is thin, it was not thin enough. I thought if I could only loose five more pounds I would be perfect. After taking a serious look at my weight I realized that what I was really tolerating was a low self-esteem and a socialitial message that thin equaled beauty and self worth. It was only after I accepted that I was never going to be model thin, I was not willing to work that hard, did I come to peace with myself and change my attitude from one of tolerating my weight to appreciating who I am. I changed my focus from my weight to establishing healthily habits, eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking water and exercising. I also no longer tolerate anyone saying anything about my weight, including myself.
Some of the daily habits I have established in my life are taking Muffassa for a twenty minute walk everyday, playing with him for at least fifteen minutes twice a day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meditating for 20 minutes a day, keeping a daily journal, eating at least five fruits and veggies a day, taking a daily vitamin and laughing at least 10 times a day. These are things that I like to do and that make me feel great.

Mistake #2 - Not a big enough vision

It’s easy to hang up an “Open for Business” shingle and then dive right into the busy-ness of day to day operations of your business. Things are going well and you think “Someday I’ll get around to writing that business plan” or “I don’t need that business plan after all”, or even “Who says you need a business plan to be successful?” Years later when you want to buy a building or expand operations you find out that the bank or investors want a plan, but you don’t have one.
Don’t put it off. Having a business plan helps you to solidify your future,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], anticipate problems, and plan for success. If you’re always running on adrenaline, putting out fires, and playing catch up, you probably need a business plan. So just do it. Block time on your schedule two to three hours a week and just get it done.
Mistake #1 - Putting it off
Traditional thirty-page business plans are not always useful for entrepreneurs. They can be overly technical and may not provide the accountability needed. Dengue virus infections are common in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world. Symptoms appear 3-14 days after the infective bite. Dengue fever can affect anyone at any time including infants, adults and the elderly.
